10 Things I Love ‘When The Camellia Blooms’ Korean Drama

There’s no guarantee that you’ll be happy with money, but it raises the possibility. You can’t get money with happiness, but with money, you can buy some happiness. ~ When The Camellia Blooms

Mama jarang sangat menulis tentang Korean drama. Sebab apa? Sebab lately nie, Mama jarang temgok Korean drama, kalau hendak dibandingkan zaman 5-10 tahun lepas. Tapi, sampai sekarang, Mama masih suka menonton Korean drama kalau hendak dibandingkan dengan drama-drama yang lain. Bagi Mama, kualiti Korean drama memang terbaik.

Sebenarnya, ‘When The Camellia Blooms’ bukanlah dalam list drama yang Mama hendak tonton pun. Tapi kan, every time Mama buka YouTube, scenes dari ‘When The Camellia Blooms’ mesti akan keluar dalam recommendation page YouTube Mama. Kalau Mama hendak tengok satu-satu Korean drama, Mama selalunya akan tengok siapa pelakon drama tersebut. Then, Mama akan baca sinopsis drama tersebut. My favourite genre of Korean drama, definitely ‘romantic comedy’. Mama suka drama yang sweet, yang boleh sampai ke tahap diabetis lah, haaa gitewww…^^;;

Finally, Mama decided, why not watch this one? Walaupun pelakon ‘When The Camellia Blooms’ nie bukannya Mama kenal, and jalan cerita not bad (kalau apa yang Mama baca lah kan), tapi sebab drama ini menang banyak juga awards, jadi, why not, kan?

And seriously, ‘When The Camellia Blooms’ memang tidak menghampakan. Rugi sangat sebab tak tengok dari dulu.

So, while I want to write reviews and what I love about this drama, I’ve decided to write the 10 things why I love this drama. And why this drama is so relatable. At least to me.

1. Plot

Plot ‘When The Camellia Blooms’ memang simple sangat. A romance between a single mother (who has an 8-year-old son) and a police officer. Plos ker, detective ker, memang Mama suka sangat. Tak tahu kenapa. Kalau baca romance novels pun, memang Mama cari yang male leads dia kerja police / detective. Sebab nanti the male lead boleh protect the female lead. Haa giteww…^^;; Macam romantic plak kan?

So, plot dia pun memang dah menang hati Mama dah.

2. Set In A Small Town

Ini lagi satu yang Mama suka. Kalau Mama baca romance novels (again, romance novels ^^;;), mesti Mama cari yang setting dia kat small town. Macam pinggir bandar. Or kawasan kampung. So, kalau romance novels yang melibatkan bos-bos project juta-juta, memang buat Mama turn off.

So, ‘When The Camellia Blooms’ is a romance between a single mother and a police officer (seperti yang Mama cakap di atas), set in a small town called ‘Ongsan’. Again, small town? Memang win untuk Mama.

3. Nosy Neighbours?

Bila you all selalu baca any romance novels (again, romance novels ^^;;), anything that set in a small town, you’ll find at least one nosy neighbour. This neighbour yang jenis busy body, yang suka ambil tahu tentang orang lain. Penyibuk, tapi sebenarnya hati baik. So, in ‘When The Camellia Blooms’, bukan sorang dua yang jenis macam nie. Basically, all the residents in Ongsan adalah jenis busy body. Suka jaga tepi kain orang lain.

Sebabnya, jiran-jiran my mother-in-law pun jenis macam ini. Jenis suka datang bertandang kat tepi pagar, and mulalah ‘membawang’. So, walaupun jenis mulut yang takder insurance, tetapi, hati tetap baik, sebenarnya.

So, watching ‘When The Camellia Blooms’ really reminds me a lot of my mother-in-law’s nosy neighbours. Which I love…:)

4. Likeable Characters

This is another weakness for me. Again, back to reading romance novels. I always look for female characters that are shy, sweet, not too intimidating and aren’t that social. I don’t know why I love this kind of female characters. I find them charming. Because this kind of female characters always open up only to the male characters that they fell in love.

So, in ‘When The Camellia Blooms’, the female lead is timid, shy and hate for any attention towards her. Since she’s considered the prettiest woman in that small town, she always has been the talk in that small town. Jadinya, dia jarang berbual dengan jiran-jiran dia, sebab tak nak ‘membawang’. And tak nak create problems. She rarely get angry and always to choose untuk mengalah.

The male lead? ~Sigh~ Where do I start? He’s straightforward, always tells what he feels,, jenis tak bersembunyi apa yang dia rasa. Since he’s a police officer, he always feel protective of the female lead. Even though, kalau ikutkan standard pelakon Korea yang Mama suka, male lead nie category biasa-biasa jer dari segi rupa, tapi, character dia membuatkan dia nampak sangatlah handsome dalam drama nie…:)

And not only the female lead and the male lead, you’ll fall in love with other characters as well. The ‘Ahjumma Squad’, the baseball player with his wife, the lawyer with her husband, the rest of the police officer in Ongsan Police Station and so many more. Basically, Mama suka semua characters dalam drama nie. Termasuk yang jahat-jahat tue lah…^^;;

5. Be Kind

Drama ini mengajar, walaupun bagaimana teruk kehidupan kita sekalipun, tetaplah berbuat baik. And jangan risau, in the future, kita akan nampak kesan kita selalu berbuat baik. Urghh, part nie, kalau Mama, memang payah lah. Tapi, yang Mama tahu, my in-laws memang jenis macam nie. Macam mana teruk pun dugaan kehidupan mereka, tetap mereka tak marah. Tetap buat baik dengan orang lain, walaupun orang buat jahat kat kita.

6. Relatable Scenes

In ‘When The Camellia Blooms’, ada satu scene berkaitan dengan pesakit yang menjalani rawatan dialisis. So, bab nie, Mama boleh relate sangat sebab mo mother-in-law pun memang sedang menjalani rawatan dialisis. So, every details dalam scene ini, memang Mama sangat-sangat memahami.

Tangan bengkak, rasa letih and cranky, and kena pergi menjalani rawatan dialisis 3 kali seminggu. Yupz, I can understand that.

7. Average Looking

Haa, bab nie. Kalau you all biasa tengok Korean drama, you all selalu akan nampak, all the male leads mesti kena perfect. Kena cantik, kena handsome, kulit flawless bagai, sebijik jerawat pun takder. Body kena tip top, slim. Kalau yang lelaki, mesti kena ada abs. Hahah!! Rambut mesti kena cantik (untuk perempuan) and smart (untuk lelaki). Basically, semua kena perfect.

But, in ‘When The Camellia Blooms’, kebanyakan pelakon memang average looking. Even the female lead and the male lead. Muka biasa sangat. Pelakon lelaki pun bukanlah kategori handsome sangat pun.

Oh, kalau tengok the ‘Ahjumma Squad’, lagi lah macam muka samseng sekor-sekor. Memang samseng pun. Muka ala-ala, ‘hang jangan cari pasai dengan aku’ haaa giteww…^^;;

Memang muka kampung habis. So, it’s refreshing bila tengok satu drama yang tidak menekankan bab-bab penampilan, tetapi lebih kepada kualiti lakonan.

8. Not Too Much Drama Between The Other Party

Or banyak-banyak segi. That’s why my top favourite Korean drama adalah ‘Descendants Of The Sun’ and ‘Goblin’. Sebab plot dia, memang takder kisah cinta 3 segi.

In ‘When The Camellia Blooms’ bukan takder cinta 3 segi. It’s more like the first love of the female lead (the one who she has a child with) yang selalu datang mengganggu kehidupan the female lead. Even though the female lead memang tiada perasaan dah dengan mamat tue. So, Mama still okey lagi. Boleh lah nak tengok lagi. Sebab masih tolerable.

9. Characters Development

Especially the female lead. She fell in love, she became stronger and finally, boleh bercampur dengan orang lain. In this drama, in the end, dia finally merealisasikan impian dia dengan pertolongan jiran-jiran dan orang tersayang.

So, Mama suka ‘When The Camellia Blooms’ sebab characters dia tak stuck in one place. Walaupun keadaan awal-awal agak teruk dierorang realize apa kesalahan dierorang, betulkan and move forward.

10. Satisfying Ending

Paling Mama suka tentang ‘When The Camellia Blooms’, the ending. Bukan setakat happy ending, tapi a satisfying ending. Ending yang membuatkan Mama rasa happy sangat-sangat.

So, kalau you all hendak tahu apa ending nya, kena lah tonton ‘When The Camellia Blooms’…:)
